ISO 14064-1 corporate greenhouse-gas inventory
Define the organisation, reporting year and emission sources before calculating a corporate carbon footprint. The useful outcome is a traceable inventory and report, with a separately agreed verification route.

Define the route and boundary
ISO 14064-1:2018 remains the published organisation-level standard. Start with the entities and facilities inside the chosen organisational boundary, the reporting period, direct and relevant indirect sources, and any removals. Record the boundary approach and the criteria used to identify significant indirect emissions. Applicable greenhouse-gas programmes add their own requirements; a programme-neutral inventory does not automatically satisfy every reporting scheme.
A practical decision before a claim
If a warehouse is acquired during a reporting year, do not simply add twelve months of its bills or omit it because records are incomplete. Establish the date and nature of control, the period covered by the inventory and the available activity records. Explain estimates and their uncertainty. Review comparability with the base year under the chosen recalculation policy rather than presenting a boundary change as an emissions reduction.
Records, deliverables and quotation
Provide fuel and electricity records, refrigerant information, source-specific activity units, emission-factor references and versions, assumptions and calculation checks. Connect each reported total to its input and responsible data owner. The enquiry should distinguish inventory preparation from independent verification and identify the intended recipient or programme. Site count, missing information, significant indirect sources and verification scope determine workload and quotation; there is no universal completion time.
Who reviews and who decides
QRS’s management-system scope is not automatic authority to verify a greenhouse-gas statement. Confirm the actual environmental verification body, competence, impartiality and any applicable accreditation or programme acceptance for the specific engagement. ISO 14065 addresses bodies validating or verifying environmental information. An inventory or verification statement is not, by itself, a carbon-neutrality claim, a reduction achievement or an authorisation to offset emissions.
Official sources and application limits
The operating examples are hypothetical, not customer events or guaranteed decisions. The actual standard and competent body determine requirements.
