IATF 16949: eligibility, preparation and recognised certification bodies
Start with the automotive manufacturing activity and customer requirement; identify the IATF-recognised certification body before agreeing a certificate route.
Operating scope and evidence for this decision
Describe manufactured automotive products, customers, production sites, shifts and supporting functions. Confirm eligibility and treatment of remote support with the recognised body under current IATF Rules. A trading or support-only description should not be treated automatically as a manufacturing-site certificate. Obtain customer-specific requirements and connect them to responsibilities and process controls. An ISO management-system accreditation is not itself IATF recognition.
Conditional operating example
For a hypothetical component change, link the authorised specification, process risk, control plan, relevant customer approval requirements and production records. Check whether inspection and traceability still support the changed product. A revised drawing alone does not demonstrate control of the manufacturing change. Evaluate applicable customer requirements without presenting every customer’s approval route as a universal requirement.
Give the assessor a usable quotation brief
Provide the legal organisation, activity scope, sites, workforce and shifts, outsourced operations, existing system maturity and requested edition. Explain the buyer’s acceptance conditions. The body reviews complexity, risk and its applicable audit-time rules; an integrated system or multiple sites does not automatically qualify for a reduction. Ask which assumptions would trigger a revised quotation.
Standard edition and programme limits
The IATF publication list identifies IATF 16949:2016 and Rules 6 thEdition effective 1 January 2025; check current sanctioned interpretations and applicable instructions. ISO 9001:2026 publication does not alone determine the IATF assessment criteria. Verify the proposed issuer’s current IATF recognition, agreement, scope and independent decision route.
