ISO/IEC 17025 training: curriculum and assessment

The programme is for testing or calibration laboratory personnel who need to connect technical work with demonstrable competence and reliable reporting.

Audience and preparation

The programme is for testing or calibration laboratory personnel who need to connect technical work with demonstrable competence and reliable reporting. Identify the laboratory activity, method family and learner's role before enrolment: a sample-reception colleague, analyst and technical signatory do not need identical practice. Bring authorised, anonymised method and record examples rather than customer samples or confidential results. Familiarity with the relevant measurement or testing process is important; this overview does not substitute for technical training in an unfamiliar method.

Learning sequence and expected records

The curriculum links impartiality, competence and resource control to requests, methods, sample or item handling, technical records and reporting. Learners distinguish method verification from validation, consider metrological traceability and interpret an uncertainty evaluation appropriate to their work. They also examine quality-control evidence and what happens when work cannot support the expected result. The learning outcome is a role-to-evidence matrix: which activity the person performs, what competence needs demonstration, which records support it and when a concern must be escalated.

Planning exercise

A proficiency-test result is unsatisfactory for one matrix. Trace method, analyst, equipment and quality-control data before deciding which reported results may be affected. The learner should propose a bounded investigation and follow-up evidence, rather than declaring either every report invalid or the isolated result irrelevant.

Assessment and role limits

Assessment requires an explained method-selection or traceability decision, a defensible record trail and identification of a reporting limitation. Agree the technical level, accessible example records and evaluation criteria before scheduling; no fixed length or accredited training credential is claimed. QRS can deliver the agreed training and exercises within its stated training role. ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation is decided separately by the competent accreditation body for a defined scope. Completing this course is not laboratory accreditation, certification of every tested product or a universal authorisation of the participant. Check the official standard edition and applicable accreditation requirements for the actual laboratory.

Prepare these practical records

  • Laboratory process mapping
  • Personnel and equipment evidence review
  • Sample test or calibration report review

Bring a laboratory scope and anonymised test or calibration records for the practical exercise.

Before agreeing the programme, compare the proposed task with the participant’s role, experience and permitted evidence. Record the criterion, what the learner demonstrated and the remaining gap separately; attendance alone does not demonstrate the work.
