Questions for your situation
Is sending every supplier the same long questionnaire sufficient?
Risks differ by product, country, activity and workforce conditions. Map suppliers and relevant lower tiers first, then make information requests proportionate to risk and significance. Higher risks may require more than self-declaration. Unnecessary documents from low-risk suppliers do not prevent critical issues being missed.
Do lower tiers need review if the direct supplier is certified?
Examine certificate scope and the risks it addresses. Critical materials, outsourced processing or recruitment may place risk further down the chain. Develop visibility where needed. A general company certificate is not unlimited evidence of all social and environmental conditions across the supply chain.
Should a contract be terminated immediately if the supplier does not share data?
Assess the reason, severity and relationship effects. Consider staged collection, capability support, site review or other reliable evidence. Serious potential harm may require prompt protective action. Termination decisions should also consider consequences for workers and other affected people.
Does signing a sustainable procurement policy provide ISO 20400 certification?
ISO 20400 gives guidance on integrating sustainability into purchasing; a signed policy does not create certification. Demonstrate selection criteria, contracts, risk assessment and monitoring. Define the report's scope clearly and assess any independent assurance or other programme output separately.
How can low prices and short lead times affect social risk?
Purchasing conditions can contribute to capacity pressure, excessive hours or undeclared subcontracting. Examine buyer order changes alongside supplier practices. Improvement may need to address forecasts, capacity, pricing and delivery plans. A supplier undertaking alone may not reduce commercially created pressure.
What should happen when a new complaint arrives despite consistently favourable supplier scores?
Check the score's period and coverage and assess the complaint as new risk information. Identify affected sites, products and worker groups. Feed verification, remedy and effectiveness findings into ratings and purchasing decisions. An earlier favourable assessment does not justify ignoring new evidence.
