SONCAP is a pre-shipment conformity process for covered Nigerian imports. A product certificate and a shipment-specific SONCAP certificate serve different purposes.
The product certificate supports the conformity basis and import preparation. The SONCAP certificate relates to a particular shipment and importer. Keep completed stages explicit. A product certificate alone does not establish that every document needed for the consignment's customs process is ready.
Selection depends on the product, manufacturer, shipping pattern and eligibility conditions. SON distinguishes PC1 for a single shipment from annual PC2 and PC3 product certificate statuses. Review assessment and monitoring requirements before comparing price. Reassess earlier scope when moving to regular exports.
SON describes shipment certification as limited to a single PAAR consignment and one party. Importer, invoice, products and quantities must match the actual shipment. Selling the same product to another customer does not transfer the previous certificate. Consider reusable product evidence separately from the new consignment record.
Plan the normal process for completion before shipment. SON does not treat post-departure cases as equivalent to ordinary applications. Prepare samples, testing, inspection and commercial documents beforehand. Assess late cases directly under current official procedures and consequences; do not promise retrospective ordinary certification.
Assess whether the report uses an accepted standard and represents actual identity and manufacturing. Explain branding and evaluate design or critical material differences. The relevant body determines further evidence. A distributor's brand declaration alone does not extend test coverage.
Correct the technical issue in the product or file. A new application does not remove its cause. Review correction evidence and new samples or tests where needed. Verify current SON programme authorisation too; an intermediary must not be presented as the authorised decision body.
Check each product's technical scope, manufacturer and corresponding product certificate. Sharing an invoice does not remove missing evidence. Clarify which items the shipment certificate can include through the authorised process. Complete mapping before transport to avoid later documentation gaps disrupting delivery.
