Auditor development training: curriculum and assessment

The auditor-development curriculum is intended for people who will collect and evaluate audit evidence within an assigned scope, usually under a defined audit programme or team leader.

Audience and preparation

The auditor-development curriculum is intended for people who will collect and evaluate audit evidence within an assigned scope, usually under a defined audit programme or team leader. State the management-system discipline and the learner's existing process knowledge before choosing the course. A person with years of production experience may still need preparation in interpreting requirements; an experienced auditor entering a new technical field needs different preparation. The course develops an auditing task, not universal technical competence or independent certification authority.

Learning sequence and expected records

The learning sequence connects an applicable requirement to an audit question, a justified sample, observed evidence and a supported finding. Participants practise neutral interviews, record review, accurate notes and communication of sampling limits. They learn to distinguish conformity, a substantiated nonconformity and an unresolved question that needs further evidence. The submitted work must identify its criterion and source; an unsupported opinion or a copied checklist answer is inadequate. Reporting and respectful communication are taught separately from the team leader's allocation and coordination responsibilities.

Planning exercise

Two auditors write different findings from the same interview. Separate the observed fact, applicable criterion and unsupported inference in an evidence log. Ask each learner which missing record would change the conclusion and to rewrite the finding with its actual evidence boundary. A fluent report alone does not demonstrate sound judgement.

Assessment and role limits

Before scheduling, agree criteria, authorised standard text, permitted anonymised records and whether the expected work is supervised participation or a later independent assignment. Assessment checks the learner's reasoning and written evidence trail, followed by feedback and an opportunity to correct errors; attendance is recorded separately. QRS can deliver the agreed training and exercises within its stated training role. A training record does not establish a certification-body appointment, a registered auditor status or a personnel-certification credential. Any external scheme must be identified and its separate requirements verified before it is advertised.

Prepare these practical records

  • Interview role-play notes
  • Observation and evidence log
  • Practice finding justification

Bring an audit scenario and examples of evidence and disputed findings for the practical exercise.

Before agreeing the programme, compare the proposed task with the participant’s role, experience and permitted evidence. Record the criterion, what the learner demonstrated and the remaining gap separately; attendance alone does not demonstrate the work.
