Water Footprints: Catchments, Uses and Impact Assessment

A water footprint is more than the total on a bill. Scope, geographical and seasonal conditions, and potential water-related impacts need consideration together.

Questions for your situation

Does one cubic metre of water have the same environmental effect everywhere?

Sources, catchment conditions and timing differ. Equal volumes may have different scarcity or quality implications. Explain the assessment method in that context. An operating water-consumption indicator and an ISO 14046 impact assessment should not be used interchangeably.

Are water bills and well-meter records enough for the study?

Examine withdrawal, consumption, return flows and quality separately. Supply-chain effects may matter depending on scope. Match meter boundaries and periods with production. Explain missing discharge or source information and justified estimates; no data does not mean zero impact.

Does reduced withdrawal after installing recycling directly equal a smaller footprint?

Lower withdrawal can be a useful operating measure, but assess changes in energy, chemicals, quality and other effects too. Do not count internal recirculation repeatedly as new withdrawal. Before-and-after boundaries and methods must support a valid comparison.

Can one result cover the same product made in two different catchments?

Define site data and local conditions separately first. Justify representation and weighting for an aggregate result without concealing significant differences. An average does not prove low risk at either particular site. Data collection, site numbers and study purpose affect duration and cost.

Does an ISO 14046 report authorise a water-friendly product label?

ISO 14046 addresses assessment and reporting; communication as labels or declarations is outside its scope. Evaluate relevant communication rules and evidence boundaries separately. One indicator should not imply that every environmental effect is favourable. Verify programme permission where required.

Can an old report be used after drought, production changes or a data error?

Check the represented period and scenarios. Assess how new conditions affect earlier conclusions and update necessary data and calculations. If an error exists, consider previous results and their uses too. Do not present an old report as current facility performance without explanation.
