Water footprint: location, consumption and impact assessment
A water bill shows a quantity purchased; a water footprint examines water-related impacts within a stated life cycle. Begin with the decision the assessment must support and the locations represented.

Define the route and boundary
ISO 14046:2014 provides a life-cycle approach to water-footprint assessment. Define the product or organisation, period, boundary, water sources and selected impact methodology. Distinguish withdrawal, consumption, discharge and internal recirculation. Depending on the scope, relevant water-quality effects also matter. Report an impact profile and its limitations rather than converting every cubic metre into an interchangeable environmental score.
A practical decision before a claim
Imagine two suppliers using the same volume of water in different basins or seasons. Their scarcity-related impacts need not be equal. A quantity without the source location and appropriate period may be inadequate for a comparative claim. Request the missing geographical and temporal data before selecting a preferred supplier on this basis. This hypothetical case assumes neither an actual local water shortage nor a measured result.
Records, deliverables and quotation
Prepare source and meter records, process balances, discharge information and the allocation of shared operations to products. Identify measured and estimated flows and avoid counting recirculated water repeatedly as new withdrawal. Document impact factors, assumptions and sensitivity to missing information. Agree the study boundary, report format and any separate review before quotation; complex supply chains and unavailable source-location data can extend preparation.
Who reviews and who decides
QRS can clarify an assessment enquiry and the competent review route; the engagement must state who performs each task. Water-footprint preparation is not automatically accredited certification. ISO 14046 does not itself approve a consumer label, a water abstraction permit or discharge compliance. The organisation must check those requirements separately and must not advertise an unqualified improvement merely because a calculation report exists.
Official sources and application limits
The operating examples are hypothetical, not customer events or guaranteed decisions. The actual standard and competent body determine requirements.
