Vegan Cosmetics: INCI Origins, Testing Policies and Formula Versions

Assessment examines ingredient origins as well as names and the programme's production and testing conditions. Product safety and cosmetic regulatory duties continue separately.

Questions for your situation

Does the INCI name of glycerin or a fat derivative identify its origin?

The same name can relate to different sources and manufacturing routes. Obtain production information and necessary origin declarations. Chemical equivalence does not automatically satisfy programme sourcing conditions. Link evidence to the actual raw material code and manufacturing location used in the formula.

What should a brand's animal testing declaration cover?

Review programme conditions for manufacturers, suppliers and tests conducted on the company's behalf. Clarify whether the declaration concerns only finished products or also relevant ingredients and development. Assess activities in other markets under the programme. A general advertising sentence does not supply all necessary evidence.

Can a new makeup shade use the same vegan file?

Check pigment and auxiliary ingredient sources for the new variant. Acceptance of the base formula does not automatically include every shade. Update the product list and necessary approvals. Colour changes may also affect cosmetic safety and labels, which need separate checks.

How should different brands be distinguished at a contract manufacturer?

Assess material identity, recipe versions, shared equipment and cleaning. Apply the selected programme's contamination prevention conditions. Production records should identify each brand and formulation. Approval of another vegan product at the site does not automatically extend to every brand or recipe.

Does vegan certification demonstrate that a product is hypoallergenic?

Vegan ingredients and testing policies differ from allergy-related claims. Evaluate “hypoallergenic” and similar wording against its own evidence and cosmetic claim conditions. Plant origin does not guarantee trouble-free use for everyone. A vegan logo is not general approval of safety or efficacy claims.

What if a supplier stops providing information before renewal?

Assess the currency of existing evidence and possible changes, then obtain necessary information or examine an appropriate alternative source. Do not conceal uncertainty through a definitive conformity statement. Verify programme status and follow-up conditions. Address gaps early because they may affect production and label timing.
