MDR in Practice: Technical Evidence, Changes and Post-Market Follow-Up

Documents in a medical device file should describe the same product and intended purpose consistently. Training should teach participants to identify evidence gaps and contradictions as well as prepare text.

Questions for your situation

What happens when the label, instructions and clinical file make different claims?

Identify the actual intended purpose and claims supported by evidence. Determine whether each difference is a documentation error or a new intended purpose. Do not choose the broadest claim without the necessary evidence. Training should map claims, risks and evidence and show which files are affected by conflicting wording.

Can a supplier’s test report be used for the entire device?

Compare the report’s component, model, configuration, method and conditions with the finished device. Assess whether integration introduces new risks or performance differences. Component evidence may be a necessary input without replacing the whole device file. Training should identify usable evidence and additional evaluation needs.

Does purchasing a clinical evaluation service transfer responsibility to the expert?

Assess the external expert’s competence, work scope and data access. The manufacturer retains its relevant obligations, and the output must be consistent with the device file. Delivery of a report alone may not fulfil the contract’s technical purpose. Training should address review of external work and management of unresolved evidence questions.

Does post-market information consist only of complaint numbers?

Select appropriate data sources and a follow-up plan according to the device’s use and risks. Complaints, service information, literature and other relevant data may contribute together. Few complaints alone do not prove trouble-free use. Training should practise feeding information back into risk management and clinical evaluation documentation.

What training is needed when a new model joins a device family?

Review technical differences, classification rationale, manufacturing, user information and follow-up responsibilities. Shared basic knowledge may remain useful, while new risks and duties require additional practice. Plan duration around the extent of the change. Competence for the old model does not automatically cover every new testing or documentation task.

Can the training provider make the MDR conformity decision?

Distinguish the course provider’s educational role, the manufacturer’s conformity responsibilities and the notified body’s role where required. Verify a particular body’s authority against its current official scope. A training certificate must not be presented as product market authorisation. Do not plan activities using expired or outdated authorisation information.
