ISO 14067: Product Footprints, Lifecycles and Comparisons

A product carbon footprint depends on its unit and lifecycle boundary. The climate indicator does not explain every environmental or social effect of the product.

Questions for your situation

Is a per-kilogram result enough to compare products with different functions?

Functions, performance, service life and boundaries should support comparison. Equal masses may not provide equivalent service. Justify the functional or declared unit for the study purpose. A lower value per kilogram alone does not establish general environmental superiority.

Can a factory-gate study be called the total footprint?

State covered lifecycle stages clearly. If use and end-of-life are excluded, do not imply complete lifecycle coverage. Explain the partial study's purpose and boundaries. Where a customer requires the full lifecycle, plan data and scenarios for missing stages separately.

How should shared-line energy be allocated between products?

Examine physical relationships between products and common processes and justify allocation. Dividing by revenue or item counts is not always suitable. Identify needs for submeters, production time, mass or other technical data. Disclose the method's effect and uncertainty.

Can the old footprint remain unchanged after a supplier change?

Material production, energy sources, transport and data quality may differ. Assess new information within the study boundary and determine result effects and update needs. An unchanged material name does not establish the same emissions profile. Keep versions and supply periods traceable.

Does an ISO 14067 result prove that a product is environmentally friendly?

The study focuses on climate change, not comprehensive approval of water, toxicity, social or other effects. Offsetting and marketing communication are separate from its calculation scope. Claims should match the measured result and boundaries rather than become a broader superiority statement.

Is adding a new model the same as correcting an error in the old calculation?

A new model may need scope or variant assessment; an error affects accuracy of an existing result. Preserve data, calculation and report versions in both cases. Check verification or customer acceptance update conditions. Budget according to additional lifecycle information and review needs.
