QRS Quality · Sustainability reporting preparation
Sustainability reporting preparation
Build a report from defined audiences, reporting boundaries and evidence-backed indicators. Choosing a framework comes before selecting attractive charts or assembling a collection of policies.

Define the route and boundary
Clarify the recipient, reporting period, entities and applicable jurisdictional requirements. GRI material topics focus on significant impacts on the economy, environment and people; IFRS S1 addresses sustainability-related risks and opportunities useful to users of general-purpose financial reports. These are different reporting perspectives. Identify the framework and actual obligations for this organisation rather than treating a voluntary report as universal legal compliance.
A practical decision before a claim
For example, a hypothetical training programme may record session duration, participant attendance and a follow-up assessment separately. Two hours of a session are not automatically two hours for every employee, and attendance does not establish improved competence. Agree the indicator definition and denominator, reconcile the source records and disclose coverage. Avoid describing an activity as an achieved social outcome when no outcome evidence has been collected.
Records, deliverables and quotation
Assign an owner to each disclosure, connect figures to records, document calculation rules and explain exclusions, estimates and restatements. Coordinate narrative claims with the same organisational boundary used for quantitative data. The preparation deliverable may include a material-topic assessment, data register and draft report. Scope, number of entities, missing records and the selected framework affect the quotation. Management must review and approve statements before publication.
Who reviews and who decides
QRS must distinguish reporting preparation from external assurance and identify any independent assurer separately. A prepared report does not automatically earn an ESG score, a sustainability certificate or regulatory approval. Verify the assurer’s actual competence, independence and agreed assurance scope, if assurance is requested. Neither a design service nor a management-system accreditation statement establishes authority to assure every environmental or social disclosure.
Official sources and application limits
The operating examples are hypothetical, not customer events or guaranteed decisions. The actual standard and competent body determine requirements.
